I was talking with a friend the other day.
Yes, I have a couple.
We were discussing the number of people complaining about not having any shows. They openly discuss it on social media and forums.
Guess they didn’t attend my Vent branding lecture at the ConVENTion.
They believe the key is a new puppet. Or a new script. Or tweaking their website.
Maybe they need a whole new market.
Should they re-invent themselves?
It has to be the backdrop! You need a backdrop and people will see how professional you are …
They jump from thing to thing, topic to topic, prop to prop trying to find their magic bullet.
I used to be guilty of that.
When I was doing magic full time, I always wondered what I could add to make people beat down my door. I “needed” that new illusion that would make my career take off.
I needed a new brochure, a new postcard, a new website design.
I think it is a phase that many performers go through.
So don’t feel like I’m coming down on anyone.
I’m speaking from a perspective of experience.
So how can you break that cycle? What do you really “need?”
You need a show.
A show:
- that gets laughs.
- that entertains the audience in front of you.
- that makes people ask for your business card.
- that makes people hire you.
And the best part – it has nothing to do with the puppet. Or the props. Or the backdrop. Or the website. Or the brochure. (Although they play a role in your business.)
It has everything to do with you!
And you are in control of you.
What do I mean?
I’ll share more on this topic next week …
In my opinion, one of the best books ever written on creating and selling your show was Ken Groves’ Breaking Down The Brick Walls of Show Business. The first edition was small but mighty. It drew great reviews. Before that, there was nothing else like it on the market.
Over the years, Ken updated and added to the book and it is still one of the best on the subject. If you own a copy or have the online course, think about this article and go read that material again.
